What is Larimar? Larimar is a rare blue variety of pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic. It received worldwide attention in 1974 when it was found on a beach at the foot of the Bahoruco Range, in the coastal province of Barahona, by Miguel Méndez and Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling. Natives, who believed the stone came from the sea, called the gem Blue Stone. The contemporary name was created when Miguel took his young daughter's name Larissa and the Spanish word for sea (mar) and formed Larimar.
